Kiba-dock on Ubuntu

Kiba-dock is a fun dock program for Beryl. It works like an OS X dock, except it includes many more features. Kiba-dock has physics simulation, allowing icons to bounce around the screen and swing around like a rope, and other cool effects.

Kiba-dock is run as a standalone program, but it depends on Beryl for its alpha-transparency. Currently, it can be compiled from source or installed from unofficial packages.

Dependencies

  • Cairo 1.2.0 (Optional: SVG support = --enable-svg and Glitz support = --enable-glitz)
  • Optional: A recent librsvg (> 2.14.4)
  • Optional: glitz >= 0.5.3
  • Xorg with Composite Extension enabled
  • Composite Manager (xcompmgr, kcompmgr, beryl, compiz).
  • The memory plugin requires libgtop
  • The trash plugin requires libgnomevfs

Kiba-dock on Ubuntu

First, you can open a Terminal Window and type the following command:

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

If you are using Edgy (6.10) version: Add the following lines to the end of the file:

deb http://download.tuxfamily.org/3v1deb edgy beryl-svn
deb-src http://download.tuxfamily.org/3v1deb edgy beryl-svn

If you are using Feisty (7.04) version: Add the following lines to the end of the file:

deb http://download.tuxfamily.org/3v1deb feisty eyecandy
deb-src http://download.tuxfamily.org/3v1deb feisty eyecandy

Save and Exit Gedit. Then, run from the same terminal window:

wget http://download.tuxfamily.org/3v1deb/DD800CD9.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kiba-dock kiba-dock-dev kiba-plugins

Running Kiba-dock on Ubuntu

Now that you installed Kiba-dock, you might want to run it. Several options are offered to you :

  • You can run it with the command:
    kiba-dock
  • You should find it in your Applications->Accessories menu.

You might also want to run it automatically when you log-in. You can do so by going to System->Preferences-/usr/share/applications/kiba-dock.desktop>Sessions (or by running

$ gnome-session-properties
). Find the startup programs tab and add a new program. Just type kiba-dock as the startup command (this has the same effect than manually copying the file
/usr/(local/)share/applications/kiba-dock.desktop
to the folder
~/.config/autostart/
)

Have a great day!
